Home décor for 2021: What’s in!

Earlier this year, we reported on home décor trends design experts said were ready to be packed away. Now, just in time for a brand new year, we present the latest styles and looks for your home sweet home.

Here are five design trends to watch for in 2021:

Plants, plants, plants: As the pandemic took its toll on our mental well-being, many of us took to indoor plants and flowers – both faux and real – as a way to brighten up our mood and the spaces we were using more and more. The trend will continue in 2021. (Here are some of the easiest-to-care for indoor plants.)

Multi-purpose: With work (and often school) from home, living rooms have become makeshift offices and kitchens are now often classrooms. As pandemic life continues, it’s time to smarten up those spaces. (Here are some suggestions.)

Bold and bright colors: While neutral walls never go out of style, making a statement by choosing a bold red, yellow or even hot pink sofa, chair, rug or throw is a great way to boost the energy and fun in your living space.

Light woods: Dark chocolate and ebony wood floors were big in the 1990s and 2000s but this decade finds its inspiration from Scandinavia and Japan, with white, light, soft-hued and even gray-toned oak.

Inside, out: Being at home doesn’t have to mean staying indoors. 2021 will see making balconies and patios more comfortable for work, with chairs, tables, rugs and plants to mimic our indoors places. (You might want to wait until late spring though!)

Did you know? Make it gold

Where chrome and brushed nickel dominated door handles and other accents in recent years, gold and brass are back from the 70s. Even better, mix it up!

  1. In this period of time. Keep your home neat an clean with no germs this pandemic is going after everyone! great small!

  2. I really like what’s in for 2021. I’m going to buy lighter curtains & drapes. Also, new rugs & runner with bursts of color.New artificial flowers will brighten my vases in the rooms.

  3. Metals are fine but I prefer hardwoods for whatever is metallic. It is warmer and the color may be changed with stain.

  4. I do agree with the gold. It’s making its way back.

The pop of color in the loving room makes sense. With people spending all their time at home. We need something to keep from getting down. I have bright deep red curtains, this gives me something to look at other than my grey walls. I also have pops of yellow, coral and orange in my kitchen so I get energy when I am in there.

I use paintings as my inspiration and this is also what I do in my spare time along with other crafts.

  5. Can’t believe gold colors are back. My hubby just replaced everything to silver. I work for a builder and we are still using silver colors for everything (chrome, nickel, gray, etc) Those are the big hitters in the design center and the models.

  6. Where I live, it seems satin or brushed nickel fly off the self faster than any other finish. I’ve always taken light wood tones like maple or beech and mixed them with dark furniture. I noticed towards the end of 2020, people were using gray tones especially on flooring and walls then accenting with white trim but did accent pieces in different colors. I redid my bathroom in gray tones and did the tub surround in burgundy and a lighter bluish gray. Everyone I showed photos of it to seemed to like it. We also redid the exterior of home in Oxford blue siding, corners and window trim were done in white with shutters painted burgundy. Doors were painted burgundy with white trim.

  7. Personally I don’t care for the brightness of gold or brass. I prefer the more subdued brush nickel or, even better, black metal or wrought iron.

  8. I did do a Patio Garden this year (had health issues that prevented me planting the regular size garden).
What is particularly important here is moderation and recycling/reusing/refining the existing furniture to do multi-purposes. I have to say there’s many who are also stretching their budgets too. (and yes, although we are repainting, repairing, the paint is still staying neutral since the bold colors mentioned tend to grate on the nerves especially when one is staying home because of pandemic or health issues).
I’d also be leery of light colors on flooring — it’s difficult enough to upkeep wood flooring (much less any other flooring type including tile), and having light colors for wood and then going in and out of your home (plus staying there all the time — much more than you usually do) is going to mean that scratches, dirt, scuffing is going to show up far easier overall (and yes, most folks make do and do the maintaining of their homes themselves).
I’m sticking with the silver which doesn’t show the effects of age as much as brass/gold does. Weather, tarnish, scratching, etc — doesn’t hold up well in any climate (I’ve lived all over in multiple different places — snow and ice, heat and salt water — it doesn’t matter, some materials just don’t last). And when it comes to even adding a new ‘smart door handle’ — that’s something that adds up the costs, so we have to carefully consider the length of time we want this to last, and go for something that is not necessarily trendy, but classical and won’t show the ravages of time.
