Great gift ideas for your newest grad

Some of us here at the Shop Talk blog remember our own high school or college graduation gifts: a fancy brass-plated pen and pencil set, a watch, a Walkman cassette player, a tie none of which have much if any of the allure they might have had a generation (or two) ago.

So what do today’s newly minted graduates want? Well, oodles of cash, no doubt. But if that’s not in the cards, here are some other great ideas to consider:

  1. Gift cards: With ever-increasing tuition fees likely to be paid back for many years to come, grocery, gas, restaurant or movie gift cards are always appreciated.
  1. Investments: Few gifts offer the promise of increasing their worth over time like shares in a company. Consider buying them stock in a company they admire.
  1. Travel gear: If post-graduation travel is on their itinerary, luggage, a knapsack, camping equipment, or even a bicycle are practical options.
  1. To the nines: Dressing up at work isn’t what it used to be but looking their best for upcoming job interviews is still important. Offer them a credit or gift certificate for a tailored suit or new outfit.
  1. Home ware: If they’re moving away or into their first apartment, they’ll need a few basics like a bed, dishes, sofa or TV. Help them feel at home in their new one.
  1. Staying connected: Smartphones and tablets have become must haves for work and play. If the price is prohibitive, consider pooling resources with other family members or friends.

  1. I am 86 years young. My 58 year daughter and I go to LA Fitness 3 times a week and work out for 3 hours each time. She is working out in the pool. I work out on the equipment on the 2nd floor until I get to a point where I am tired so then I start biking and get bored so I pedal the bike and knit or crochet at the same time and before I know it my daughter will phone me on the cell phone and advise time’s up. I get a lot of gifts completed. In fact I am almost finished crocheting a scarf for my daughter that uses thread and is circular and a little more than 6 feet across. It is a birthday gift for her. I never make things for myself but mainly for the children who live in our condo building. Life is FUN. Keep busy.

  4. It is best to give the gift cards .that way they can get what they need or want. Have something you don’t need or want is not the best

  5. A good gift for a grad from school would be money to get them stuff and also a car if they don’t have one already or a trip somewhere they haven’t been

  9. I have found that either gas cards or good (dinner) cards are really appreciated.

My baby is graduating he really isn’t expecting a gift from me but I want to get him something meaningful something to help him to know he’s a man now and he has to take care of himself I’ve spent so much money on him already what do I get the young man who doesn’t want to go to college the only child who doesn’t
