Diabetes Spotlight: Breakthroughs in 2015

If you’re a person living with diabetes, or know someone who is, you’re aware of this blood glucose disorder and its often devastating health effects. Type 1 Diabetes (also called Juvenile Diabetes) is an autoimmune disease that strikes children as well as adults and occurs when the body’s immune system destroys cells in the pancreas that produce insulin the hormone that helps us obtain energy from food. Type 1 has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle and causes lifelong dependence on injected or pumped insulin. Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which insulin is still produced but can’t be used by the body effectively, often as a result of obesity and an unhealthy diet. It can often be treated with diet and lifestyle changes, as well as oral medications and sometimes requires injected or pumped insulin. Last year saw a variety of promising breakthroughs and discoveries that could help people with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes:
  • Researchers at Harvard University developed a new way to quickly convert stem cells into beta cells which produce and store insulin an important step in finding a cure for Type 1.
  • University of Miami doctors completed a minimally invasive transplant of insulin-producing cells into a woman, helping her produce insulin for the first time since she was diagnosed with Type 1, 26 years ago.
  • Clinical trials for a first-ever insulin pill, developed by scientists in the U.S. and Israel, are underway. The pill is being tested initially on Type 2 patients and, if successful, promises to one day replace insulin injections.
  • A recent Ohio State University study suggests a work-based dietary intervention program focused on increasing moderate exercise and reducing calories and fat may be effective at reversing pre-diabetes and preventing diabetes.

Did you know? Pre-diabetes is a real concern While 29.1 million Americans have diabetes, another 86 million or 1 in 3 adults have pre-diabetes. Without weight loss and physical activity, they’re at risk of developing Type 2 within 5 years. Ask your doctor if you’re at risk! (Source)

  1. I have been dealing with diabetes since I was 18. I am now 65. I have come to see what you eat makes the difference. bottom line, eating protein and good fats and low glycemic veggies got me an A1c 6.1. just wanted to pass on. jmo

  2. I’ve have diabetes since 2004,and it have really taken a down way so right knowing I need help with my diet and to control of this disease. It has stop me from walking to get some of this weight off and it also is my down fall for eating.

  3. i use to blog for Everydayhealth about “Diabetes in the Family” for about two years, and did stories on my husband who was diagnosed with Type II. He doesn’t take insulin and was told he is fairly in control of his situation, yet, I still see the stubborn will in him to eat unhealthy and grab a soda, and binge on crunchy snacks during his work day. I’ve seen him go through eye surgeries, and experience low blood sugar at times, and it is scary. I’m thankful that new things are being invented and explored to improve people with these conditions. I encourage my husband to work on losing 50 pounds, which would greatly help him, yet he is an adult and has his mind set that he won’t get better, but is deaf to my suggestions that he could have a better quality of life if he did. Keep up the good work. Just saw this info on my email today.

  4. Type II Diabetes is very scary.
my dear friend has a type 2 diabetes what I’ve learned is it’s very very important to stay on the diet.
He went blind and eye doctor did a lens replacement sympathize he has extremely painful feet from the apathy he gets dizzy hot sweat drenched.
He had a hard time keeping the glucose levels low.
My advice to anyone facing the situation is follow your doctor’s instructions you have so much to lose and it can be controlled.
    God bless

  5. My first husband was a serious type 2 diabetic injecting 3 times a day. He did not control his sugar intake. I have been an herbalist for over 40 years and kept him alive for 10 years giving him the herbs and vitamins that dealt with his problems even though he had 8 life threatening diseases. My second husband is also diabetic though he is diligent about his sugar intake. However, he feels like aspartame is good for him. I have read many studies and wonder if the lobbying of Monsanto is not skewing the opinion of its use. What is your educated opinion?

  6. It’s wonderful that science has been able to improve the disease
of diabetes. My sister died of the disease with congestive heart problem
and kidney failure in December of 2015. My check-up revealed a
pre- diabetes score that I am trying to reverse and not eating that much
sugar in my diet. I’ve been drinking not only water but read labels and
drink liquids that have lower sugar, like orange juice and fruit drinks.

  15. I have only had diabetes, but I won’t be taking any of the medications recommended because they only mask problems. I know diabetes is reversible and I am getting ready to join a proven team that will help me to do just that. Illnesses are a racket for Big Pharma and I refuse to participate.

    1. I am getting ready to put up a website and blog about diabetes and how scary it is; what can happen to you if you don’t get it under control and even while you are getting it under control it is so important to make sure that you are eliminating any sugar that you take into your body with the medications. I was diagnosed with prediabetes for many years but paid no attention because none of the doctors ever said a word about the prediabetes; I am so sorry for that today. Someone should have said something because I could have taken control of it before I was diagnosed. I know exactly how you feel about taking the medications and about big pharma lies out there but please, at least for your own health and until you get your A1c numbers under control, you should take the minimum amount of “probably metformin” to get those numbers down. I can tell you I did it with watching my sugar intake, taking metformin, and I simply began eating oatmeal every single day for breakfast. Within 30 days, my numbers were back down to the prediabetic state, I lost 15 lbs., and my bad cholesterol was way down. That was the only change I had made. Oatmeal? You can fix it up anyway that you might enjoy it too. Read everything you can about it too. If you want to follow my facebook account on this: I just started a new facebook page and it will be tied to my new blog about diabetes too as soon as I develop a website! But in the meantime, please stop by my Facebook page above and say hello. There are millions of us that have this illness and we need to be here for each other for support, challenging one another, and boosting each other up when needed. So please come by and say hi!
