Gone are the days when Americanized Chinese food, like General Tso chicken, are the go-to Asian dishes ordered in restaurants and for takeout.
Various East Asian cuisines continue to grow in popularity—from Korean known for its spicy fermented foods like kimchi and gochujang to Thai and Vietnamese dishes due to their perceived healthiness, as well as the ever popular Chinese and Japanese.
Asian flavors like matcha, complex spice blends and ingredients like seafood are big hits, especially for health-conscious consumers.
Here are five increasingly popular Asian foods or dishes capturing our hearts and taste buds:
- Kimchi: This traditional Korean side dish made from fermented vegetables, most commonly cabbage and radishes, is noted for its spicy and tangy flavor. Kimchi is rich in vitamins, fiber and probiotics, making it both a flavorful and healthful addition to any meal.
- Pho: A Vietnamese soup consisting of broth, rice noodles, herbs and meat, usually beef or chicken, pho is renowned for its complex flavors and aromatic spices. It’s a comforting, nourishing dish that’s gained international acclaim.
- Sushi: While sushi is already well-known globally, its popularity continues to grow, with new variations and fusion creations expanding its appeal. This Japanese dish combines vinegared rice with various ingredients like seafood, vegetables, and sometimes tropical fruits.
- Bao buns: Soft, fluffy steamed buns filled with savory ingredients like braised pork, pickled vegetables and herbs. Originating from China but also popular in Vietnam and elsewhere, the bao have become a favorite in street food markets and upscale restaurants alike.
