As with our favorite books of 2023, choosing the best films over the last 12 months is always a challenge. These days, amazing movies are just as likely to find their way to movie, TV or tablet screens.
Still, we’re going to give it a try. Here are five films from this past year that we can’t stop thinking about:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: After a dozen films featuring this legendary superhero, how much more was there to say? Still this latest installment delivered with amazing visuals and non-stop action.
Oppenheimer: Has Christopher Nolan ever made a bad movie? This stunning movie featuring physicist Robert Oppenheimer’s development of the atom bomb is one of the year’s best.
Barbie: The other half of 2023’s Barb-enheimer summer, this surprisingly clever and subversive hit, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, made us laugh and think.
You’re So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah: A heartwarming Netflix tween comedy that tells the tale of two besties in conflict and their plans for a bat mitzvah to remember.
Alice in Borderland: If you loved Squid Games, you’ll love this Japanese series we binged on in 2023, in which an obsessed gamer name Arisu finds himself in a game-ified version of Tokyo, struggling to survive — a third season is scheduled for next year.
